Willey Mansion Conservatory

Historic property owners engaged the Mills Group to develop a sensitive addition to one of West Virginia's most important residential structures. The existing home dates back to 1840 when Waitman T. Willey built the home as his personal residence and law office; Willey later became one of the first Senators for the State of West Virginia.

This project scope included the creation of a conservatory room to provide a light filled refuge for the owner to escape to as well as to entertain in. The design was challenged with the existing roof lines of the house, exterior building openings, and overall architectural style. The new design maximized the day lighting potential while respecting the original federal architectural style on the interior and exterior.
